Before our 2nd daughter was born, I happened to be over at a friend's house who had a little 6 month old. On the counter was a box of their baby's rice cereal. I was alarmed (to say the least) when I noticed the long list of ingredients included in what was supposed to be a simple first-time food for babies.
As some of you already know, when a child is first starting to eat solids, it's important to introduce one food at a time into their diet. Rice cereal is no exception to this rule! Simple ingredients such as "brown rice" should be practically the only item appearing on the ingredient list so that if the baby has any reaction, that food can be removed from the baby's diet.
As I read over the label of my friend's baby cereal I noticed Soy was listed at least 2 times in different forms. We talk mainly about Gluten and Dairy allergies on this website but did you know that there are eight foods that account for 90 percent of all reactions. And SOY is one of those eight. The other are milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, fish and shellfish.
Studies show that if you can keep your child off of these 8 allergies until the age of 2, the better chance your child will have at not developing a allergic reaction to them.
According to a study released in 2013 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, food allergies among children increased approximately 50% between 1997 and 2011. Yikes!
And with allergies on an all time high, keeping your child off of these 8 common allergens is something big YOU can do to help your child since hereditary genetics are not on your side as well.
Bottom line, read the labels. Understand what ingredients are being consumed by your child. Cut out foods that harm and incorporate back in foods that are REAL and as nature intended.
So with that said, here's a super simple baby rice cereal you can make quickly in less than 5 minutes and feel good about serving to your little one.
Baby Brown Rice Cereal

Yields about 1/3 cup
- 1 Tbsp Organic Brown Rice Flour
- 1/2 cup cold water
- In a small saucepan over medium heat add the water and brown rice flour. Stir continuously until the mixture thickens to your desired consistency. Cool slightly and heat test before serving.
